CONGO GAME

Congo -  a fun late 1800's century 28mm skirmish game (from the makers of Saga Studio Tomahawk) set in the wild Jungles and Savannah's of Africa.

Congo is a 2 player game that is played on a 4' x 3' foot table. There are 4 types of warbands to choose from being : The Whiteman Expeditions, Sultanate of Zanzibar, Forest Tribes and the African Kingdoms. Each player has between 70 points and 100 point warbands (about 30 models) that are lead by 2 characters such as the Retired Officer, or even a Witchdoctor.

The difference with Congo is that you have set cards to choose your different actions with, be it movement, shooting, rallying, or intimidating the enemy. Each game turn has 3 phases and a card activation must be played each phase, but you have to pick all 3 cards at the very start of each turn, depending on the card you pick at the beginning of the turn is the outcome of the gaming turn. The cards also have an initiative number on the top as well, so you may want to move 3 units but being a low initiative you may be doing this after your opponents more vital shooting action - all depends on whats more important at the time.

The easy thing with this game is that all shooting and melee hits are worked out on a 5+ to hit ,  so your basic units will use a D6 dice, others will use a D8 dice, and the Elite will use a D10 dice .... so all too easy

I have collected the Whiteman Expedition of course, with an Old English Retired Officer leading some British gentlemen explorers and to accompany him, they have a small unit of Sikh Rifle armed Soldiers and some Askari Musketmen with a few native scouts - you could say my force is more geared up around shooting the enemy - while Andy being more intent on melee damage.

 Andy has gone the Forest Tribes with a Pygmy King and Witch doctor being his lead characters, accompanying them he has Pygmy warriors and Pygmy archer units, some Cannibal warriors and Young warriors armed with captured muskets.

We played a fun game on Saturday night,  so a bat report of the game

exception of some random sheep here and there.


A not so good start for me  (as when someone enters a piece of terrain, you roll on a random events table) with Andys small pygmie archers entering some jungle cover the rain clouds formed overhead and a torrential downpour happened...... all my gunpowder weapons get soaked so not fire for a turn and my muskets get a reload marker ... Andy is laughing as he has no such sophisticated weaponry

Andys Witch doctor decides to go into a ritual dance to provide him some handy totem card,
but the Witchdoctor gets carried away with it all, and just maybe has too many of those nasty shrooms and slips into a befuddled state .....  for game purposes he counts as dead, for some reason Andy has a knack of overdosing his witch doctor characters, as he has done it in 3 straight games now .... 


The downpour ends and my Adventurers waste no time in shooting their
 rifles down at some Young warriors, some of them go down

My Scouts charge into some wee pygmie archers ,  slippery buggers get away
and kill one of my scouts ....... 


My Askari shoots thier loud muskets into some men yonder, scaring them 
(muskets places an extra panic on units it shoots at)  but at a cost as they must 
spend their next action round reloading ... 


Andy does a terror test on my archers in a bamboo wood , and the outcome is good, I draw an animal token .. A mighty Gorilla gets placed in a piece of terrain of my choosing
so he gets placed nice and close to the Cannibal unit ...... the Cannibals seem to like this however and see off the gorilla ,  well that didnt work !!



My Adventurers are being charged by the Chieftain and his bodyguards , I kill two and Andy hits me 3 times killing two of them, BUT the Adventurers have a cool rule , when they loose two of thier men due to shooting or melee damage, they can take a extra panic token to cancel on of the hits ...........  very good



The next couple of turns sees my archer unit kill more men, but my Askari unit does very well and kills a unit of men, but in return Andys Hunters and also his wee Pygmy archers are having a field day dishing out poison darts/arrows among my units -  you don't get any cover saves with poisoned shots ..... my Elite Solider unit (of 4 men) 
gets killed in one volley from the Hunters . A terrible blow to the British Expedition


Andys Cannibals must be getting hungry !!  as they charge the adventurer's, and as I have 2 melee panic tokens on my unit, they are left quite defenseless so are quickly killed ..... they spend some time eating their fill causing some panic in nearby troops of mine ..... 
bunch of Savages !!! 


I shoot my archers at Andys Hunters and 3 of them are killed -  thank goodness for that as they were becoming quite troublesome 



The final turn see me finishing off the unit of hunters but there's no stopping those cannibals as they charge into another unit ..... End of game.

 Well Andy had a good start , I had a good middle section and then Andy's Hunters and Cannibals mopped up the late game giving Andy a small win on points , losing my Solider unit early on and then my Adventurer's after this, cost me dearly I think as they have a very good D10 rifle dice on hand.

So all in all a fun afternoon of Congo gaming.  Love these miniatures and the simplicity of this game.

PAINTING FOR AN UPCOMING TOURNAMENT

There must be another tournament coming up, as the brush has seen some paint this week I'm going to be playing in a 1000point Bolt Action tournament this weekend being Panzershrek XVIII in Palmy

It will be the good to get back to Panzershrek this year having missed it last year, I will be playing a themed 1939 Winter War Finnish Bolt Action army - so all early war goodness.

My list has a First Lieutenant , a standard Regular 9 man Winter war rifle squad with tough fighters ability added  , 3 units of Veteran Sissi squads (6 men in each) all on ski's with tough fighters and master of the hunt ability's - these will form the backbone of my army, rather small units but with being able to move and then turn into ambush dice in the same turn they are very good. I have taken the standard Medium Machine gun and Medium Mortar squad and the Anti-tank Rifle squad.  I have to take the Sniper option in my list with his Master of the Hunt rule as its very nice at killing nasty units such as flamethrowers ......  I then round the list out with the Medium Howitzer, a captured BA-10 armoured car and my little Vickers 6-ton twin MG turret Tankette  !!    giving me 12 platoons in total.

As you can see not a lot of AT assets there with the biggest being the howitzer at +5, then the BA-10 with its light AT +4  and then the little AT rifle being +2  ..... but meh its all about the infantry skiing about ambushing the right units and doing my best to flank the heavy tanks perhaps .... not too worried.

The only thing left to do now is the KV-1 tank and my Finnish force is all done,
hopefully will get this done after the tournament as rather enjoying tank painting at the moment -  thinking of a whitewash perhaps.

FINNS VS GERMANS BOLT ACTION

With it being a horrible weekend Andy and myself thought it was time to play a game of bolt action.  I decided to use a Winter War 1939 Finnish list, so a fair amount of Veteran elite infantry units backed up by a outdated Vickers 6-ton tankette and the BA-10 amoured car...... meanwhile Andy was using his Late War some what reluctant German list of inexperienced green troops with the mighty Panther in support, a sdkfz 222 armoured car and 150mm Nebelwerfer.

We decided to play the mission where you have to get the one objective in the center of table off your board edge to win -  sorry forgot the name .


End of turn one (units arrive from table edge)  - I am in the forefront with BA-10 car, 2 units of Sissi infantry and 105mm artillery on left side with Vickers tank, sniper in center building with Lieutenant and Reg inf unit center, MG in center right , and Mortar and Sissi unit on right.    Andys units arrive on the far table side being his green Fallchirmjager units on the left with his Lieutenant. Flamethrower behind the hedge next to his Panther, then his Kreigsmarine unit and the Nebelwerfer on the hill ... the 222 and field police are still in reserve.



I push my infantry units up towards the small house, and the Sissi towards the forest for support fire.  my Sniper takes out a unit commander (score!)
Andys Panther kills two of my MMG guys and pins them down. His Flame thrower unit moves behind the big barn building.


My BA-10 throws lots of MG fire at his left unit of green Infantry taking out half the unit
 they think that is enough and decide to run off , this has left Andys CO in precious position out in the open .... but he manages to escape later the following turn .... 


The Panther gets preoccupied with trying to knock out my MMG and Mortar teams while giving hard cover to Kreigsmarines ...... with this I decide to move my Vickers tank up the center to force the issue and proceed to take out 6 out of 10 of his green troops advancing. 


Turn 3 - Andy has a very good turn here ... he gets the first two dice from the bag ... 
Andys Nebelwerfer aims at the house were my CO and Sniper are residing .(not good) I decide to go down with the Sniper .... of course he rolls to hit and misses everything in range but the Sniper team .... and he manages to kill both guys .... I dont like rocket Mortars I have decided, there not very good but Andy has a knack of rolling 6's when he wants them


Andy's Panther then advances down the street and proceeds in punching a great hole in the side of my little tankette blowing it up.  


Andys 222 armoured car arrives and shoots into the forest into my Sissi ski unit , 
the Kreigsmarines also shoot into their as well,  but they stand firm.


Turn 4 , now did I mention I dislike Nebelwerfers, well they are just plain horrible, just horrible I tell you. Andy aims it into my 6 man Sissi Ski units out in the road .....
he naturally rolls a 6 of course, killing 3 of them, and then also just clipping the unit behind - rolls yet another 6,  killing all 6 in the unit  !!!!   what are the odds I ask you
Andy was bent over in a laughing fit at my dismay, I must admit it 
was rather funny though ... LOL


After that I got my revenge as Andy moves his flamethrower up to take the 
objective and proceeds to flame a few regular riflemen of mine, 
but they pass their morale in good spirits .. haha
I then move my Lieutenant's unit up into hand to hand 
well Andy wasn't expecting that ,,,  the flamethrower is killed and I get to 
consolidate 5" bringing the objective with me to sneak behind a 
building out of the way of Panther .


Andy thinks that was a good idea and decides to rush his own Lieutenant into combat with my now 2 man unit of Sissi, with his tough fighters rule he rolled his dice and missed (haha),
 I rolled my two in return and it kills him .....


The Next turn see's my Lieutenant running away closer to the table edge, in hot pursuit are Andy's Kreigsmarines blazing away with thier LMG and rifles, but somehow he managed to survive the fire. The Panther fires point blank into my Reg troops killing several and placing a fair number of pins on them .... I had no option but to rally them . 
Andy moves his 222 car around the tree line and kills the mortar team and then the next turn he kills the last MMG team member .... not good for me.


I then move my BA-10 car up behind the Panther .. I hit the rear armour but sadly 
only manage to pin it


The following turn it was all on a dice roll, if I managed to get mine first my CO would leave the table handing me the win , if it was Andys he would more than likely kill me this time.
.............  it was my dice so the win was mine.

A great game ,  we ended up killing 5 units each, so quite the blood bath
